Inspirationsdag

2006-03-23 | 23:12

I have a painting (probably watercolor) dated 1920 by O. Sandin of my relative's former farm titled "Backen" from Brandsdorp Sweden. Searching the net your site came up. Goteborg is not that far from Bransdorp, so I thought you might know who O. Sandin is. The story handed down in the family is Sandin painted barns for a living, and also painted pictures of the farmscapes associated with those barns. My Grandmother came to Chicago in about 1900 from Ostra Amtervik in Varmland when she was 17. Her maiden name was Nordlund and she died in 1977 at 93 years old. I don't know how Bransdorp figures into her history, but am curious about the painting, and I do have a B&W photo of the farm. If you can shed any light on this painting or O. Sandin, I'd be grateful.
BTW, I work for DIAB, a Swedish company with HQ in LaHolm.

My paternal family name in Sweden was Perrson.

Hi, read your message and got curious. I dont know if you misspelled "bransdorp" and meant" brandstorp". Searching the swedish "yellow pages" on the web I got no hits for bransdorp but 27 hits for brandstorp. "torp" in swedish is a very common suffix for small villages and means basically "small farm". Searching for "sandin" I got 2000 hits, sadly I don't no much about the history of my family and relatives.

Marc, sorry for my late replay. But, as my brother already has pointed out there're quite a few of Sandins in Sweden - it's not a very common name, but not that rare eighter, so I'm afraid that I can't give you more help than he already has.

The only little tip I can give you is that "backen" in Swedish can be interpeted as "the little hill" or "the slope" - so the name of the painting might reflect the motif instead of the name of the farm? If you're able to find out something else it would be fun if you can give us an update as well.
Take care and good luck.

Just wanted to give you some more info...Östra Ämtervik lies, as you say, in värmland and near Östra (eastern) Ämtervik lies a two places with names similar to "backen" namely "backarna" (the slopes, plural of slope) and "mossbacken" where "moss" means the same as in english "moss" or mosse". So the name "mossbacken" can be translated as "the slope with moss". I dont know if there is a brandstorp near Västra Ämtervik, it might be...

and by near we're talking about, say, a couple of hundered meters (500-1000). It should be said though that a search for "backen" gives around 500 hits in Sweden...

Sorry for no reply. I just discovered your message today 8/1/06. Use my work address for reply to above as it's faster and gets daily attention.
Upon viewing the Sandin picture, it does seem as the farm house is on a small rise or hill. The picture is truly titled "Backen" at "Branstorp", so I believe the name of the farmstead really was "Backen". My Dad (2nd generation in the US, but knew how to speak and understand Swedish and travelled there twice as a kid, but now has had a stroke and is no help in this search) placed the engraved tag on the picture. I don't think he would have just made up the name and gone to the trouble of making an engraved tag with the wrong name. I believe he visited this very farm, probably around 1924-5. I still have relatives in Sweden (the family of Nordlund), as well as here (same Nordlund), of the exact same line. I will try to contact them here for more information. I'll send a jpeg of the picture and black and white photo of the O. Sandlin drawing if you would find that interesting. I have my garandmother's account of our family (Nordlund) history back to King Karl the 12ths time. I assume it is accurate as she was in her 60's when she wrote it down. She was a remarkable woman. She was born on a farm in Ostra Amtervik in 1884, came to the US in 1905 +/-, divorced in 1922, raised my Dad alone, travelled around the world 3 times, saw a man land on the moon, and lived to 93 in Chicago, then decided to die and did. A very strong woman, less than 5 feet tall, but tough as nails, and taught me many things.
I may have a chance to visit Sweden for business (DIAB LaHolm) in a month or 2, and may take vacation time to research this.
Again, sorry for the long delay to your reply.
Regards,
Marc Peterson

Another long delay, sorry. New email address. No new information. Dad has died (Aug 2007), as well as all of his generation except some cousins at 95+. The're no longer lucid. I did get to LaHolm, but not to Ostra Amtervik. Thanks for your help.MP
